Malaysia-based U Mobile has partnered with Telekom Malaysia (TM) under a RM2.4 billion (USD 568 million) agreement to fast-track its 5G rollout using TM’s nationwide 740,000 km fiber infrastructure. The 10-year deal includes access to fiber leased lines, data centers, and inter-regional trunk connectivity, supporting U Mobile’s goal of achieving 80 percent 5G coverage within one year.
As part of its new strategy, U Mobile has exited Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), the state-led 5G infrastructure entity, though it will retain a wholesale access agreement with DNB. Instead, U Mobile will now position itself as an independent 5G provider.
Huawei and ZTE have been selected as U Mobile’s primary technology partners to implement advanced features such as network slicing and 5G-A capabilities. The rollout will prioritise indoor coverage in high-demand areas like transport hubs, medical centres, and sports venues, aligning with U Mobile’s sector-specific 5G expansion strategy.
