ACEN, the energy arm of the Ayala Group, is set to join the development of one of the Philippines’ first offshore wind projects by acquiring a 25 percent stake in the San Miguel Bay wind project in Camarines Sur. The agreement, signed with Denmark-based Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), is currently pending regulatory approval.
The San Miguel Bay project, with a potential capacity of up to 1 GW, is in shallow coastal waters near a substation, favourable for construction and grid connection. Its location within the bay also offers some protection from severe weather, including typhoons. Still in pre-development, the project is positioning itself for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) upcoming Green Energy Auction (GEA-5). Once operational, it’s expected to reinforce the Luzon power grid and contribute to meeting the country’s growing electricity demand.
