The Government of Indonesia has begun certification trials for two new electric train models—CLI-225 from local manufacturer PT Inka and SFC120-V from China’s CRRC—on Jakarta’s commuter rail network. Each train must complete at least 4,000 km during testing before it can enter commercial service.
The CLI-225 trains stem from a 2023 contract in which PT Inka agreed to deliver 16 units to the operator KCI, aligning with Indonesia’s goal to boost domestic rail manufacturing. Meanwhile, CRRC secured a 2024 deal to supply 11 SFC120-V trains after winning a competitive tender against Japan and South Korea-based companies, marking CRRC’s second major contract in Indonesia following the delivery of high-speed CR400AF trains.
Both models feature stainless steel car bodies, operate at speeds up to 120 km/hr, and utilise efficient IGBT-based inverter traction systems. The SFC120-V trains, in particular, can accommodate up to 3,400 passengers, addressing the high-capacity demands of Jakarta’s growing commuter population. This modernisation effort aims to improve service reliability and frequency, enhancing Indonesia’s suburban rail network.
