The Government of Laos has signed an agreement with Chitchareune Construction to develop the 1,200 MW Nong wind power project in Savannakhet province, Vietnam with an investment of USD1.9 billion. The project’s feasibility study is in progress and is expected to be approved by the second quarter of 2026.
The first phase, with a capacity of 702 MW and an investment of USD1.12 billion, is scheduled for completion by 2027, while the second phase, adding 498 MW for USD797 million, will follow after 2030. Once operational, the project will supply Vietnam with 1.53 billion kWh annually in the first phase and an additional 1.11 billion kWh in the second.
Vietnam currently imports 3,464 MW of electricity from Laos, a figure projected to rise to 5,000 MW by 2030, with the potential to reach 8,000-10,000 MW in later years, according to Vietnam’s Power Development Plan VIII. The country also imports around three billion kWh of electricity annually from China and Laos, as reported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
