Thailand’s Energy Ministry is seeking cabinet approval for projects worth 12 billion baht, which are aimed at improving electricity transmission capacity in the eastern region. The capacity improvements that would be carried out by the vertically integrated power utility, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), will cover the Rayong, Chachoengsao, and Chon Buri regions. EGAT is planning to use funds from multiple sources: foreign financial institutions, local banks, the Export-Import Bank of Thailand, foreign and local bond markets, as well as its internal reserves. The project would be implemented in two phases:

  • First phase – investment amount: around 5.95 billion baht; covers the upper eastern region; completion date: 2017.
  • Second phase – investment amount: 6.05 billion baht; covers the lower eastern region; completion date: 2019.
