Government of Thailand is seeking a USD200 million loan from the World Bank to finance solar power installations and energy-efficiency improvements in public buildings and industrial zones. The proposed financing would be channelled through the Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM Bank), with the Ministry of Finance guaranteeing the loan. The first phase would focus on Bangkok and industrial estates, supporting rooftop solar installations, electrical system upgrades at schools, healthcare facilities and district offices, and improvements to public lighting. Energy service companies would cover the initial costs, with participating organisations repaying them over time through long-term service fees.
Separately, Thailand’s Department of Climate Change and Environment and Krungthai Bank have agreed to develop a Just Transition Roadmap, supported by initial funding of THB20 million (approximately USD598,000). The initiative will examine financial support for small and medium-sized enterprises, workers, farmers and communities transitioning to cleaner technologies. Under a separate initiative, the department, energy group PTT and Krungthai Bank will collaborate on the I-SPARK project to explore blended finance, carbon credit development and public-private investment, beginning with a pilot for low-carbon industries in Rayong province.
