Thailand has called off the plan for EGAT to import up to 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG from Malaysia’s Petronas. The step has been taken owing to the reversal of a policy that would have allowed the state-run utility provider to import 1.5 mtpa of LNG. The initial long-term LNG import plan was part of the Thai government’s attempt to boost competition and liberalise the country’s energy sector, in which state-owned PTT Public Company Limited and its subsidiary had been the sole gas suppliers and LNG importers. However, EGAT will continue to import spot cargoes from Malaysia.
