The provincial Government of Davao Oriental has launched a solar power project to address increasing power outages and high electricity costs in the area. The plant will be located in a 40-hectare area in Barangay Maputi, Philippines. The works on the plant will commence in November 2023, with power generation scheduled in Q1 2024.

The plant will incorporate storage facilities to provide uninterrupted and stable electricity even during nighttime.

Once operational, the solar power plant will reduce electricity costs in Davao Oriental by 25-30 per cent. The establishment cost which is the energy source itself, contributes to the overall expenses. In the initial phase of operation, the plant is expected to utilise 20-30 per cent of its capacity, but power prices can be reduced when combined with other power sources like coal and diesel.

DY Green Energy Corporation and Davao Oriental Electric Cooperative (DORECO) are in discussions to finalise the supply agreement which will reduce the electricity rates in the province.
