San Miguel Energy Corporation (SMEC) has secured a contract to provide engineering services for the 500 MW Wawa Pumped Storage Project in the Philippines. The project is owned by Olympia Violago Water and Power Incorporation (OVWPI)  and will be developed in two phases. Phase I includes the Lower Inlet/Outlet, Lower Gate Shaft, part of the Tailrace Tunnel (TRT), and other components in the inundation area, meanwhile Phase 2 covers the remaining system.

SMEC’s role in Phase I of the project will involve project redesigning to increase plant capacity to 600 MW, updating the feasibility study, and offering support to OVWPI for the issuance of contract variations with the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor. This will include changes in the employer’s requirements, proposal evaluation, contract negotiation support, design review, and on-site supervision. Phase I of the project is expected to be completed by August 2024.
