The Government of Singapore will introduce its first solar-powered electric boats on the Singapore River, with two of ten Pyxis R ferries set to begin operations by April 2025. Manufactured by Pyxis, these vessels will replace half of WaterB’s 20-boat fleet by the end of the year. The remaining eight boats will be delivered gradually.
Each ferry can generate 22 kWh of electricity daily through solar panels, with the total energy from ten boats enough to power 20 HDB flats for a day. They also feature vehicle-to-grid technology, enabling excess energy to be returned to the grid. WaterB expects the ferries to reduce operational costs by 30-40 per cent, as solar power will cover at least 50 per cent of daily energy needs. The boats, which provide a quieter and more stable ride, will operate between Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Marina Bay.
