Key MRT expansions in Singapore will include longer stations to allow for future increases in train capacity, said Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow in Parliament. New lines will start with smaller trainsets and expand when demand rises:
- The upcoming Jurong Region Line (JRL), opening in phases from 2027 to 2029, will operate with three-car trains initially, expandable to four cars.
- The Cross Island Line (CRL) will begin service with six-car trains in 2030 but is designed to accommodate eight-car trains in the future.
The Seletar Line, running from Woodlands to the Greater Southern Waterfront, is under study since 2019, with updates expected during the 2026 Budget debate (February–March).
To ease congestion, a free off-peak travel pilot scheme on the North East Line (NEL) and Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) starts Dec 27, 2025, running for at least one year. It applies to morning off-peak rides before 7:30 am or 9–9:45 am on weekdays. The government will fund the scheme, which aims to reduce crowding and improve peak-hour conditions.
