Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has completed a USD2.5 billion programme to renew and upgrade the North-South and East-West mass rapid transit (MRT) lines (NSEWL). The upgrade and renewal works included the replacement of timber sleepers with concrete ones, changing the third rail, upgrading the signalling system and renewing the power system.
The power system was replaced at an investment of USD500 million and the track circuit system was replaced at an investment of USD73 million. Additionally, seven of the 106 new trains ordered commenced operations in October 2023 and the remaining 99 will commence operations by 2026. The trains were replaced at an investment of USD1.5 billion.
The power supply renewal works comprise the replacement of 1,300 km of power cables, 250 km of fibre-optic cables, and many power transformers and switchboards.
