The Singapore LTA has commenced trials of a gateless hands-free automatic fare collection (AFC) system at Redhill, Tiong Bahru, Kembangan and Bedok stations of the East-West MRT line. Singapore-based ST Engineering has supplied the system. The trials are scheduled to be completed by December 2018. The AFC system incorporates long-range radio frequency identification (RFID), facial recognition and stereoscopic people-counting camera technologies. The passengers are required to register and upload a picture at the interactive traveller terminal to obtain an RFID-enabled card, wristband or key-tag to pass through the gate.
