The island of Pulau Ubin in Singapore will derive 95 per cent of its electricity from solar power. EDP Renewables installed 328 kWp solar panels together with batteries with a capacity to store 1 MWh of electricity, which can power 83 four-room Housing Board flats. The energy storage system helps to maintain a consistent supply of energy during lower solar power generation.
After this move, less diesel will be needed to power Pulau Ubin’s 10-year-old microgrid. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) established the microgrid in 2013 which then could derive 15 per cent of electricity from solar power.
Plans are under process to develop micro-grids on other islands in Singapore.
