Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) is undertaking a feasibility study with partners to test hydrogen fuel cells for ships in Singapore. The team will first conduct a feasibility review with the goal of installing the fuel cell by 2022 and then will aim to operate the vessel for a 12-month trial period to test it’s performance. The trial will include the construction and deployment of a supplementary power unit fuel cell on an existing roll-on/roll-off vessel that ferries goods, vehicles and machinery on lorries between Singapore and Shell’s Pulau Bukom manufacturing site.

Shell will supply the fuel cell and also commission the trial vessel. The company is collaborating with SembCorp Marine Limited (SCMN.SI) and its subsidiary LMG Marin, which will model the fuel cell and renovate the vessel owned by Penguin International Limited (PGUN.SI).
