Singapore has ranked first among other Asian countries on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Energy Transition Index (ETI) 2021, indicating its advancement toward a more inclusive, sustainable, affordable and safe energy system.

The index evaluates 115 countries on their capacity for transitioning to cleaner energy systems as well as the current energy system performance in three components of the energy triangle: environmental sustainability , economic development and energy stability and accessibility indicators. The ETI approach was updated for the 2021 study, taking into account recent developments in the global energy environment as well as the growing urgency for action on climate change. Singapore was ranked 21st in the world, while Malaysia and Indonesia were ranked 39th and 71st, respectively. Singapore’s overall score has stayed stable over the last six years, indicating the energy system’s resilience.

As a global refinery centre and an emerging hub of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade, Singapore plays an important role in the global energy system. The country’s fossil fuel industry is also a significant driver for the economy.
