The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced plans to launch an open-loop fare payment system on Malaysia’s public transport networks, particularly those operated by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB). In addition to using the Touch ‘n Go contactless smartcards, passengers will also be able to use their bank cards (credit or debit cards) to pay for fares in the future.

This move in line with the MoT’s plans to introduce multiple modes of contactless fare payments on public transport to increase passenger convenience. This move will end Touch ‘n Go’s monopoly on cashless payments in Malaysia.

In 2019, Mastercard EMV payments were also rolled out on the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services.
