The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore has received four proposals to pilot six autonomous buses on public routes starting mid-2026. However, the composition of the bidding entities is somewhat unclear. The proposals were submitted by: WeRide (Singapore); a consortium of Malaysia’s Handal Indah, Toyota Tsusho Asia Pacific, and Singapore’s MooVita; Cycle & Carriage Automotive; and a consortium of MKX Technologies, Zhidao Network Technology (Beijing), and a BYD subsidiary.
This follows LTA’s January 2025 call for proposals to trial six autonomous buses over at least three years. The trial may expand to include up to 20 buses across three routes, based on performance. The selected bidder will work with operator SBS Transit to develop operational plans. Initially, each vehicle will have a bus captain onboard for safety. After six months of proven autonomous operation, remote supervision may be allowed. Additional safety measures will include seatbelt use and onboard customer service officers to support passengers.
