The Government of Japan has approved a loan of USD306 million to fund the construction of a new container terminal at the Port of Sihanoukville in Cambodia. The new container terminal is being constructed to cater to the growing throughputs of containers and goods at the port.
Works on the container terminal port project will be executed in three phases. Construction under the first phase is scheduled to commence in 2025, while the project’s phases 2 and 3 will commence in 2028 and 2029, respectively. Once completed, the new terminal will allow the port to accommodate larger cargo ships.
The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port is the only international and commercial deep seaport of Cambodia. In 2021, the port handled 6.9 million tons of containerised cargos, an increase of 6 per cent year-on-year.
