The Government of Thailand has announced that construction of the first light rail transit (LRT) system in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen will begin in 2025, with passenger service scheduled to start in 2027.

The Khon Kaen Transit System (KKTS) will be jointly implemented by the municipalities of Nakhon Khon Kaen, Muang Sila, Muang Gao, Tha Phra, and Samran at an estimated investment of THB650 million.

The LRT will be developed in two phases. Phase 1 will cover the 4.4 km section around Kaen Nakhon Lake, while Phase 2 will span 22.8 km connecting Samran to Tha Phra, with an expected investment of THB26.9 billion. Negotiations with banks are currently ongoing regarding the interest rate for the loan for the second phase.
