The Ministry of Transport (MOT) of Vietnam has announced plans to complete a combined 580 km of metro lines by 2035 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). By 2045, the two cities aim to add another 369 km and an additional 158 km by 2060. The goal is for urban railways to account for at least 30 per cent of public transportation capacity by 2035 and over 55 per cent thereafter.

Hanoi’s current metro network includes two operational lines: the 13-km Cat Linh-Ha Dong line and the 8.5-km Nhon-Hanoi Station line. The city plans to develop a network of 10 metro lines totalling over 410 km by 2030, with an additional five lines extending the network by another 200 km. By 2065, Hanoi is projected to have 15 lines spanning 617 km, with an estimated total investment of USD55 billion.

HCMC’s first metro line, the 20-km Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien, is 98 per cent complete and expected to begin operations by 2024-end. By 2030, the city plans to have 31 km of metro lines, expanding to 183 km by 2035, with an estimated investment of USD36 billion. HCMC aims to complete its full 510-km urban railway network by 2060. Funding will come from a mix of local budgets, central government support, loans, and private investments.
