The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) has released a comprehensive framework to integrate nuclear energy into the country’s power generation mix, marking a major milestone in its clean energy transition. The policy foundation for the nation’s first commercially developed and operated nuclear power plant (NPP), designated as the Pioneer NPP.
The Pioneer NPP will serve as a baseload facility with priority dispatch status, ensuring a stable energy supply regardless of the reactor technology used. The circular aligns the DOE’s efforts with the Independent Market Operator and System Operator to promote a transparent and competitive investment environment. The initiative aims to diversify the Philippines’ energy mix, enhance energy security, and support climate goals by reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
