The Department of Transportation (DOTr) of the Philippines, in partnership with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and G-Xchange Inc. (GCash), has launched a tap-to-pay fare system on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) in Manila under the Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) project.

The new system allows commuters to pay for train fares by tapping their Visa-enabled credit, debit, or prepaid cards directly at station turnstiles or by scanning QR codes via e-wallets such as GCash. The upgrade is aimed at promoting a cash-lite economy and improving the convenience of fare payments.

Visa has confirmed that its contactless payments are now accepted at all MRT-3 stations. BSP stated it will continue collaborating with DOTr and payment service providers to enhance interoperability and ensure secure transactions.

MRT-3 spans 16.9 km and covers 13 stations between North Avenue and Taft Avenue.
