The 1,200 MW Ilijan combined-cycle natural gas plant will run on diesel oil during the Malampaya gas field’s temporary shutdown and due to gas unavailability. The plant currently holds three diesel oil storage tanks which will be used as a backup fuel source during the unavailability of natural gas from the offshore field.
The Ilijan plant is the Philippines’ largest natural gas facility and sources its power from the Malampaya gas field. The Malampaya project generates 30 per cent of Luzon’s total power generation and supplies 20 per cent of the national demand. In October 2021, the average supply is expected to be 15,038 MW, while the average demand is expected to be 11,162 MW.
