The Philippines has energised Phase 1 of the Tantangan Solar Power Project in Sultan Kudarat, marking the commissioning of 74.5 MWp of solar generation capacity. According to the Department of Energy (DOE), the project is being developed in two phases and is 97.3 per cent complete, with full commercial operations scheduled for October 2026. The project is being implemented by Apolaki Seven Inc. and ib vogt in collaboration with the DOE and national and local government partners.

Upon completion, the ground-mounted solar facility will have a total installed capacity of 99 MWp, supported by a battery energy storage system (BESS) capable of delivering 4 MW of power and storing 16 MWh of energy. The storage system will improve the plant’s operational flexibility by enabling excess solar energy to be supplied during peak demand periods. The project is expected to generate approximately 163 GWh of clean electricity annually and supply enough electricity for around 68,000 households.

The Tantangan Solar Power Project was awarded a Solar Energy Operating Contract under the Philippines’ Green Energy Auction Programme in September 2023. The project supports the country’s strategy to strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on imported energy, and increase renewable energy generation. Renewable energy currently accounts for more than 25 per cent of the Philippines’ power generation mix, with the government targeting a 35 per cent share by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040.
