The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced that approximately 4,164.92 MW of power projects, including renewable and conventional sources, will be operational in the Philippines by the end of 2024. Currently, 835.888 MW of these projects are under testing and commissioning.
Mid-merit plants will contribute around 1,320 MW, while baseload and peaking plants will contribute around 678.06 MW and 2,164.92 MW respectively. Among the regions, Luzon is expected to contribute 4,030 MW, Visayas 80.25 MW, and Mindanao 52.50 MW.
Among the committed capacities, the Mariveles Coal-fired power plant, with a total capacity of 600 MW, has one unit fully operational and the remaining units are undergoing testing, with the facility expected to be operational by Q3 of 2024. Additionally, the Batangas Combined Cycle Power Plant by Excellent Energy Resources Incorporated (EERI) is expected to contribute 1,320 MW, with each of its three plants offering a 440 MW capacity, slated to be fully operational by Q4 of 2024.
The DOE is also expecting to start commercial operations on 1,984.775 MW of solar projects, with 498.888 MW currently undergoing testing and commissioning, and 966.294 MW expected to come online by June 2024 Additionally, an additional 590 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is anticipated to become available during the year, adding to the existing 32.42 MW already in service.
