Petroleum Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has confirmed a new petroleum discovery in the Sirung-1 wildcat exploration well, which is located 237 km off the coast of Miri in the Balingian Province. This came after the well was drilled to a depth of 2,538 meters in February 2021. The prospects of this province has been further validated with the discovery of a large oil and gas column more than 100 meters within the Oligocene to Middle Miocene sandstone reservoirs.
Similar efforts are being carried out in the neighbouring blocks of SK411 and SK306. Sirung-1 is a part of Block SK405B Production Sharing Contract (PSC), in which Petronas has 15 per cent participating interest.
