Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) to explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) opportunities and projects in Malaysia. The partners will conduct technical maturation activities in order to investigate possible CCS options, such as carbon dioxide storage sites across the nation.

Works also include analysing an optimal capture, storage, and transportation method, as well as estimating emissions, capture volumes, and monitoring methods for CO2 stored underground. The two companies will also investigate strategies for capturing and transporting CO2 from Petronas’ Bintulu liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility.

This move is in line with Petronas’ ambition of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The company had previously signed a similar agreement with Shell and Posco to explore CCS opportunities and project collaborations in Malaysia.
