Austria-based Gebrüder Weiss has completed the transportation of major components for the Penang Hill Cable Car project in Malaysia. The company managed the shipment of more than 60 containers carrying cable car equipment from Doppelmayr’s manufacturing facility in Wolfurt, Austria, to Penang Island. The cargo was transported via a multimodal logistics chain, involving rail transport to Hamburg followed by sea freight to Malaysia.
The cable car components were shipped in multiple consignments according to a fixed delivery schedule. After approximately 38 days at sea, the shipments arrived at the Port of Penang, where Gebrüder Weiss handled customs clearance and onward transportation to the project site near George Town. The new aerial ropeway system, being developed by Austrian cable car manufacturer Doppelmayr, will feature eight-passenger gondolas and provide a new transport link between the lower station and Penang Hill’s summit.
The Penang Hill Cable Car project is scheduled to commence operations in 2026 and will complement the existing funicular railway serving the tourist destination. The system will transport passengers to an elevation of approximately 720 metres within the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognised protected area. The project is expected to improve visitor accessibility to one of Malaysia’s most popular tourism attractions while supporting sustainable mobility infrastructure in the region.
