State-run port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Pelindo II), also known as the Indonesia Port Corporation, has selected Japanese conglomerate Mitsui Company Limited to be its partner in jointly operating the first container terminal at Kalibaru port in North Jakarta. The facility is expected to begin operations in mid-2015. The two companies will soon establish a joint venture (JV) to operate the terminal, in which, Pelindo II will own a 51 per cent stake, while the Japanese business group will hold the remaining 49 per cent. These entities have already signed a shareholders’ agreement. The construction of the first container terminal is slated to take off. It will be divided into two phases. The first phase will involve the construction of a terminal with a length of 400 metres; it will be completed by end-2014. The second phase will involve the extension of the length of the terminal to 800 metres; this will be done in May 2015. The first terminal will have a total capacity of 1.5 million twentyfoot equivalent units (TEUs).
