Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced that passenger rail services will begin on the Pasir Gudang–Kempas Baru line within six to 12 months by 2026. The timeline during the reopening of the upgraded 39.9 km cargo route, noting that at least three passenger stations will be identified and built along the alignment.
The new passenger service will initially utilise existing Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) coaches, with future plans for new rolling stock under discussion. The ministry will collaborate with the state government to select station locations, while financing will be supported by the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC).
The line, previously closed for upgrades since October 2024, now supports increased cargo handling—tripling capacity from 140 to 420 TEUs per day and expanding trips from two to six daily. The RM55 million upgrade involved track repairs, drainage improvements, and modernised signalling systems, enhancing freight connectivity across Peninsular Malaysia and to international ports including Thailand and China.
