The state government of Penang has issued a Notice to Proceed to commence the construction of the Mutiara light rail transit (LRT) project. The project will be constructed by SRS Consortium, a joint venture of Gamuda, Loh Phoy Yen Holdings, and Ideal Property Development. The initial works will include utility relocation, road widening, piling, and site establishment works along approved segments of the route.
In addition, Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) (formerly Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd) has selected MMSB Consult Sdn Bhd as the independent consultant engineer for the project. The scope of work includes a thorough review of the design, construction, testing and commissioning, and operation and maintenance phases, ensuring adherence to all relevant project requirements, standards, and regulations.
The Mutiara LRT will span 29.5 km and cover 21 stations, connecting key areas of Penang Island. Passenger services are expected to commence in 2031. Currently, MRT Corp (via its subsidiary MRT Mutiara Sdn Bhd) has invited bids through three tenders to supply SCADA, the telecommunications system, and the ticketing system for the project. The last date for the submission of bids for the three tenders is August 11, 2025.
