The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is planning to complete the Leyte–Mindanao interconnectivity project by 2018. Further, the operator hopes to begin construction on the project by 2016 that will connect the Mindanao grid to the grids of Luzon and Visayas. This project is viewed as one of the long-term solutions to ensure a steady power supply in all three islands. The NGCP initially planned to loop the Mindanao grid through the Leyte–Surigao route but the grid operator opted to consider other areas after finding the Surigao route infeasible due to technical limitations.
