The Indonesian government plans to construct new tracks for the medium speed Jakarta-Surabaya railway connection. The new tracks will use land owned by state-owned railway operator KAI and run parallel to the existing 700 km of railway tracks in the northern coastal areas of Java. The new tracks are expected to reduce the travel time to around four hours. There will be no railway crossings as the rail tracks would be elevated to pass over roads. Earlier, the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology had estimated that restructuring of existing tracks would entail an investment of $6.1 billion. Japanese technology is likely to be used in this project.
