The cost of constructing Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh Province, around 40 km from Hanoi, has been revised to VND196.37 trillion (USD7.5 billion) following recent design and capacity upgrades approved by the Ministry of Construction. According to the State Appraisal Council, the airport will now handle 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2050, compared to the original plan of 15 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes.

Construction of the airport began in December 2024, with the upgraded design positioning it as the northern region’s aviation gateway for both passenger and freight operations. The project, developed by Masterise Group, includes four runways allowing independent operations, and will be built to 4F standards, capable of accommodating large aircraft such as Boeing 777 and Airbus A330.

Once operational, Gia Binh International Airport will complement Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi’s current main gateway, which has a capacity of 25 million passengers per year and is slated for expansion to 55 million by 2030 and 85 million by 2050. The new airport is expected to boost regional connectivity, logistics efficiency, and northern Vietnam’s aviation capacity.
