The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has begun demolition works at the Metrowalk property in Pasig City, marking progress on the Ortigas segment of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) after a three-year delay due to right-of-way (ROW) challenges. The agency has now secured 82 percent of the required ROW for the project, allowing site clearance and fencing works to move forward.
The DOTr successfully negotiated with Blemp Commercial of the Philippines, owned by the Singson family, to demolish structures within the eight-hectare Metrowalk property. The area, previously housing the Payanig sa Pasig amusement park, had long been entangled in ownership disputes dating back to the Marcos era.
The Ortigas segment falls under Contract Package 104, covering the station and viaduct between Ortigas and Shaw Boulevard. Originally scheduled for partial operations before 2028, the DOTr has revised the completion target to 2032, citing delays in ROW acquisition and construction. Once complete, the MMSP will provide a faster link between Valenzuela and Ninoy Aquino International Airport, easing congestion across Metro Manila’s major corridors.
