The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC) has granted seven Thailand-based companies permission to import LNG into the country. The firms include Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), PTT Global LNG Company, Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited, B.Grimm Power Public Limited Company, Electricity Generating Public Limited Company, Siam Cement Public Limited Company and Hinkong Power Company.
In light of this move, LNG imports are expected to increase to 0.48 million tonnes in 2021, 1.74 million tonnes during 2022, and 3.02 million tonnes in 2023. Imported LNG will be used to fuel gas-fired power plants that generate electricity for factory consumption and sale. LNG imports are predicted to account for 70 per cent of Thailand’s total natural gas supply in 2037, up from the current 13 per cent.
