The Nam Sam 3 hydropower plant in Laos has commenced commercial operations in Laos. Developed by SCI Group as the EPC contractor, the 156MW plant has been handed over to Nam Sam 3 Power Sole Limited Company, a subsidiary of Phongsubthavy Group. Located in Houaphan province near the Laos-Vietnam border, the project includes a 121.7m-high RCC dam, a 9.1km tunnel, and a 225m surge tank. It connects to a 230 kV substation.
Construction began in October 2019 and faced challenges such as difficult terrain, extreme weather, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the project was completed on schedule. After a 72-hour reliability test, it entered full operation on February 2025. The plant is expected to generate 626 million kWh annually, contributing to Vietnam’s energy security and regional economic development. SCI Group is also working on other projects in Laos, including Nam Sam 3A (45MW), Nam Mo 1 (60MW), and Nam Mo 2 (120MW).
