The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) of Thailand has revealed plans to complete the construction on all six mass rapid transit (MRT) rail lines in Bangkok by 2019. The construction of the Purple Line (Bang Yai–Bang Sue) is 60 per cent complete, followed by the Dark Green Line (Mor Chit–Saphan Mai; 40 per cent) and the Light Green Line (Bang Wa–Taksin Road; 5 per cent). Further, bidding for the Pink Line (Khae Rai–Min Buri) and the Green-Yellow Lines from Lat Phrao to Samrong is expected to start by end-2013. Finally, bidding for the Orange Line (Taling Chan–Min Buri) will begin in 2014. Construction on these lines is expected to begin in 2015. Under the government’s 1 trillion baht infrastructure scheme, six new metro lines and four high-speed rail routes will be developed by 2020.
