MRT Jakarta has signed a USD289 million contract with Japan-based Sojitz Corporation, in collaboration with India-based Larsen & Toubro (L&T), to undertake tracklaying and supply railway systems for Phase 2A of the MRT project in the capital city of Indonesia. The Contract Package 205 has a term of six years and three months and comprises the engineering, procurement, and installation of MRT facilities, including tracks, signalling, and communications systems. Nippon Signal will supply signals for the project.

Phase 2A will extend the existing MRT line by 5.8 km from HI Roundabout to Kota.  The extension will have six intermediate stations at Thamrin, Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar and Glodok. MRT Jakarta aims to open the section to Monas by 2027, with the full extension to Kota slated for completion by the end of 2029.

As of March 2024, overall construction progress for Phase 2A stood at 33.36 per cent, with the Thamrin-Monas section 74 per cent complete, while works on the Harmoni-Mangga Besar and Glodok-Kota sections are 28 per cent and 50 per cent completed respectively.

Moreover, MRT Jakarta has revived plans for a metro extension from Lebak Bulus station to South Tangerang, previously halted due to funding constraints. Construction of the South Tangerang MRT extension is expected to commence no earlier than 2025.
