Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), together with its project partners, has inaugurated Phase 1 of the MTerra Solar project in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. The first phase comprises 1,373 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and an 825 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), equivalent to 3,300 MWh of storage, making it one of the world’s largest integrated solar and battery energy storage facilities developed on a single site.
Phase 1 has fully energised all 741 battery units and is currently capable of exporting up to 750 MW to the Luzon grid, pending the completion of additional grid-related works. Following the successful completion of grid tests, the facility will begin supplying 600 MW of mid-merit renewable energy under a Power Supply Agreement with Meralco. By the end of June 2026, more than 2,000 MWdc of solar panels had been installed, while the project had recorded over 30 million work hours without a lost-time injury.
The MTerra Solar project is expected to strengthen the Philippines’ energy security by increasing indigenous renewable energy generation, improving grid stability through integrated battery storage and reducing reliance on imported fuels. The project supports the Philippine Energy Plan and the country’s renewable energy targets of 35 per cent by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040. In addition to its energy benefits, MGEN has invested PHP88.6 million in education, livelihood, public safety and community development programmes, while supporting local employment, road safety improvements and agrivoltaics research in partnership with Central Luzon State University.
