Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Line (ECRL) has reached 79.95% completion as of February 2025, marking a significant shift from underground to large-scale above-ground construction. The 665-km-long railway, spanning Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor, is on track for completion by 2027, with system installations now progressing along the entire route.
The RM74.96 billion project, of which RM50.27 billion is allocated to construction, is financed by China’s Export-Import Bank and built under the Belt and Road Initiative. With 20 stations planned, the ECRL aims to drive regional economic growth. Contractor CCC-ECRL, a subsidiary of China Communications Construction, highlighted the role of over 2,000 Malaysia-based subcontractors and recently awarded 18 vendors for excellence in project performance.
