A proposed railway extension linking Rantau Panjang and Sungai Golok is expected to enhance transport connectivity and boost bilateral trade between Malaysia and Thailand.
The project, currently under consideration by the Malaysian government, aims to strengthen supply chains, facilitate cross-border movement of goods, and reduce logistics costs. Thai authorities have already initiated feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments as part of plans to expand their double-track railway network.
According to Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah, the rail link would improve efficiency in cargo transport, speed up deliveries, and increase trade capacity across Malaysia, Thailand, and neighbouring Indochina markets. Rail transport is particularly suited for bulk cargo, making it a key enabler for regional supply chain integration.
The enhanced connectivity is also expected to open new opportunities for commodity trade and manufacturing, while improving market access for small and medium enterprises in border regions. Beyond trade, the project could further support cross-border interactions in tourism, education, and social exchanges, particularly in southern Thailand.
