The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will extend the railway track at Penang Port from 500 metres to 1,010 metres to improve logistics efficiency and reduce road congestion in Malaysia. The upgrade will enable all 50 rail carriages to be loaded fully within the port, compared to the current 30, which forces the remaining 20 carriages onto public roads and disrupts traffic.
The project will be fast-tracked through a strategic partnership approach instead of a conventional tender. Discussions are ongoing with MMC Ports and the Penang Port Commission on cost-sharing, while the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) is expected to provide used tracks and other materials to reduce expenses.
