Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has approved 181.25 MW of renewable energy projects worth MYR1.87 billion (USD440 million) under the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) programme. The approvals cover 48 projects sourced from biogas, biomass, and small hydropower, and are expected to begin supplying electricity to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) by 2028.
The approved capacity includes 30.93MW from 20 biogas projects, 53.5MW from 8 biomass projects, and 96.82 MW from 20 small hydropower installations. These were selected from 59 applications submitted during the bidding window held between January 15 and February 19, 2025. The FiT programme is part of Malaysia’s broader target to achieve a 70 per cent renewable energy share in its power mix by 2050, while also enhancing energy supply reliability through diversified RE sources.
PETRA said the projects reflect its commitment to a sustainable and innovation-driven energy transition in line with the values of Malaysia MADANI. The initiative also aims to catalyse private sector investment and long-term sector growth through consistent and firm electricity generation from distributed RE sources.
