The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation of Malaysia has approved 13 large-scale solar (LSS) power projects with a combined capacity of 1,975 GW, accelerating the country’s energy transition. Among the approved projects is a 200 MW floating solar facility. All projects are expected to commence operations between 2027 and 2028, significantly reshaping Malaysia’s power supply landscape.
The approval follows the fifth round of the LSS program, launched in January 2025 by the Energy Commission to award contracts totaling 2,000 MW. Since the first LSS program in 2016, Malaysia has approved solar projects with a cumulative capacity of 4,263 MW. As of June 2025, total installed solar capacity exceeds 3 GW, with solar energy driving renewable energy growth in the country.
The ministry emphasized that these projects will support national renewable energy targets, aiming to increase the share of renewable energy to 70 per cent by 2050. The development of these projects is expected to boost clean energy supply, reduce dependence on traditional energy sources, promote related industries, and generate employment opportunities.
