Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is waiting for the outcome of discussions between the Sarawak and federal governments regarding the state’s proposal to build a new international airport in Kuching. MAHB has confirmed that no final decision has been made yet, though Sarawak has requested technical support from MAHB. Further, MAHB has instructed its internal teams to assist within limits while awaiting federal approval.
The proposed airport at Tanjung Embang is part of Sarawak’s broader infrastructure plan and will be modelled after Doha’s Hamad International Airport. The state believes the new facility is critical to boosting tourism and economic growth. A committee led by the Sarawak Financial Secretary is reviewing proposals for the development. MAHB holds the first right of refusal to manage any new airport under its existing agreement with the federal government and remains committed to national aviation policies.
MAHB is also moving forward with expansion projects elsewhere. The Penang International Airport upgrade is set for completion by June 2028, increasing its capacity to 12 million passengers annually. This project is unfolding in three phases, with terminal design and contractor appointment expected by 2025-end. Additionally, MAHB is finalising plans to expand Kota Kinabalu International Airport and upgrade facilities in Tawau, Miri, and Kota Bharu.
