The official launch of the Jakarta-Bandung high speed rail (HSR) line in Indonesia has been delayed until early September 2023. PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China (KCIC) has pushed back the limited trial launch, initially meant for August 18, 2023, to ensure passengers’ safety. However, there will be no delay in the full operational launch scheduled for October 1, 2023.

The trial of facilities and infrastructure has been completed. As of now, KCIC is checking supporting operational elements to ensure safe functionality once passenger service commences.

Originally slated to begin operations in 2019, the rail project is four years behind schedule and has experienced budget overruns, from its initial estimate of USD6 billion to USD7.2 billion currently.

Additionally, the Government of Indonesia is also planning to extend the 142-km-long HSR line by stretching it to Surabaya, East Java.
