The government of Laos has unveiled a five-year strategic transport roadmap to modernise national infrastructure and strengthen regional connectivity. The plan prioritises upgrading 500 km of highways to meet ASEAN freight standards, developing new railway links with Vietnam and Thailand, and constructing dry ports to boost trade and logistics efficiency.
Major projects include improvements to National Road No. 13 South, rehabilitation of National Road No. 8, and construction of new bridges in Bolikhamxay and Champasack provinces. The government also aims to complete ongoing works such as the Mekong River Bridge between Xiengman and Luang Prabang, and local highways connecting southern provinces. Preparatory activities are underway for the 6th Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge linking Salavanh with Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani.
Beyond roads, Laos will focus on expanding logistics infrastructure through the development of three dry ports in Thakhek (Khammouane), Huayxai (Bokeo), and Luang Prabang, complemented by improved cross-border freight management. River transport along the Mekong will also be modernised to support cargo and tourism operations.
Rail development is another key focus, with feasibility studies progressing for new routes including Vientiane–Thakhek–Naphao–Vung Ang, Kaisone Phomvihane–Dansavanh, and Vientiane–Champasack. The plan supports integration with the Laos–China Railway and the broader ASEAN rail network, positioning Laos as a central hub for regional transport and trade.
