The Governments of Laos and Thailand have advanced the Xiengman–Luang Prabang Mekong Bridge project after completing the environmental and social impact assessment and approving the detailed design. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 following the negotiation of a concessional loan, with Laos preparing to sign the formal financing agreement. Thailand approved THB1.78 billion (USD55.4 million) in financial assistance for the project in September 2026.
The 820-metre bridge will connect Chomphet District with Luang Prabang town across the Mekong River and will include five box-girder spans, with a 120-metre central span positioned 15 metres above the river. A 14-km connecting road will link the bridge approaches. Construction is expected to take four years, with operations targeted to begin in 2031 under a seven-year operation and maintenance contract. The project is expected to strengthen the road connection between Luang Prabang and the Xayabouly–Thailand border corridor and reduce travel time between Thailand’s Nan Province and Luang Prabang by around 30–45 minutes.
